Bale is a legendary striker who played for Tottenham Hotspur, Real Madrid and the Wales national team, particularly as a right-winger, and is renowned for his lightning-fast passing. He is considered one of the greatest players of his generation and is widely regarded as one of the greatest British players of all time.
Bale began his professional career at Southampton, moving to Tottenham Hotspur in 2007 as a left-back. He won the PFA Player of the Year and PFA Young Player of the Year awards in the 2012–13 season, becoming only the second Premier League player to achieve the feat after Cristiano Ronaldo in the 2016–17 season.
In September 2013, Bale joined Real Madrid for a world-record fee of £85.1 million (€100.8 million), forming a formidable attacking partnership with Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema. In 2014, he helped Madrid win the Copa del Rey and the Champions League, scoring in both finals. He was nominated for the UEFA Best Player in the World Award in 2015–16, and was also nominated for the Ballon d'Or several times, finishing as high as 6th in 2016.
He scored what is considered one of the best goals in Real Madrid's 2018 Champions League final, and won the FIFA Club World Cup Golden Ball in 2018. During his 9 years in La Liga, he won 15 trophies, including 3 La Liga titles and 5 Champions League titles (he spent the 2019–2020 season on loan at former club Tottenham). After Real Madrid, he joined Major League Soccer club Los Angeles in July 2012, and retired in January 2013, aged 33.
He made his international debut for Wales in May 2016 and went on to score 41 goals in 111 appearances for the national team, becoming Wales's player of the year and top scorer. He has also won the Wales Player of the Year award a record 6 times. He was Wales' top scorer in UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying, scoring 6 goals. He also played in Euro 2020 and helped Wales qualify for the 2012 FIFA World Cup, ending Wales' 64-year absence from the World Cup.
