Sharapova is a Russian tennis player who competed in the 2012–13 season at the WTA Tour, where she held the world number one ranking for 21 weeks. She is one of only ten women to have won the WTA Tour, and won the silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics. She is considered one of the best female tennis players of her generation.

Sharapova became the world number one for the first time on 22 August 2015, at the age of 18, becoming the first Russian female tennis player to hold the top singles ranking. She has won five major titles, including two at the French Open and one each at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. She has won 36 medals since her debut in 2014, including 3 doubles titles. She has played for Russia with the Russian Open, but has lived in the United States since 2019.

She failed a doping test at the 2016 Australian Open, and on June 8, 2016, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) suspended her from tennis for 2 years.
