Since his debut, he has been renowned for his consistent skills throughout his career and is considered the greatest goalkeeper of all time. He has played over 1,100 professional matches and holds the record for most Serie A appearances. He has played for three generations of football, competing with some of the world's best players, winning numerous trophies and individual awards.

Buffon made his Serie A debut for Parma in 1995, and won the Coppa Italia, UEFA Cup and Supercoppa Italiana with Parma in 1999. In 2001, he moved to Juventus for a world record fee of €52.9 million, winning the Serie A title in each of his first two seasons. He played for Juventus for 17 years, winning a record nine Serie A titles, He has won four Coppa Italias and five Supercoppa Italianas, and is the first goalkeeper to win the Serie A Player of the Year award, and has also won the Serie A Goalkeeper of the Year award a record 12 times.

In 2018, at the age of 40, he signed for French club Paris Saint-Germain, where he played one season, winning the Trophee des Champions and Ligue 1, before returning to Juventus the following year. During the 2019–20 season, Buffon played as a reserve behind first-choice goalkeeper Sezani, breaking Paolo Maldini's record of 647 Serie A appearances and winning his 10th league title with the club. As an international, Buffon is the most capped player in Italy's history with 176 caps, and the fourth-most capped European player of all time. He also holds the record for most appearances as Italy captain after taking the captain's armband in 2010. After making his debut in 1997, he played in the 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups, winning the 2006 World Cup and keeping a record five clean sheets, winning the Golden Glove as the tournament's best goalkeeper. He has also represented his country at four European Championships, the 1996 Olympics, and two FIFA Confederations Cups, winning a bronze medal at the 2013 tournament. He announced his retirement from international football in 2017 after Italy failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, but reversed his decision the following year, playing in friendly matches for the national team, and announced his retirement from football in May 2018.

Buffon was named in the 2004 FIFA 100 list of the world's greatest players by Pelé. He is also the only goalkeeper to have won the UEFA Men's Player of the Year award after reaching the Champions League final in 2003. He has also won the UEFA Men's Goalkeeper of the Year award and has been named in the UEFA Team of the Year five times. He was runner-up for the Ballon d'Or in 2006 and has been named in the FIFA Pro World XI three times. He is the first goalkeeper to win the Golden Foot award, and has also won the IFFHS World Goalkeeper Award a record five times, along with Casillas and Neuer, and was also voted the best goalkeeper of the past 25 years and the 21st century by the same organization.
